Gone is the transitive “Pink” theme we’ve grown accustomed to. Enter Nicki, expert of the Antiquities, in the 4th term of her totalitarian regime.
On Queen, the reigning monarch is her playful self. She teases innuendo and causal links to borderline relationships. In regards to Eminem, they tussle for a bit on “Majesty,” but barely long enough for a crowd to come sailing. Nicki even realizes a childhood dream by invoking Foxy Brown on the final measures. Foxy’s Broken Silence was a record that shaped the way she envisioned her career unfolding. If Nicki is Foxy’s Brown musical progeny, where does the line pass from here?
It may be too soon to level off balanced of opinion of Nicki’s 4th album, the day of its release. Within the coming days we’ll be able to gauge whether her arduous stop-and-go treatment of the album was well intended or not. Nicki Minaj promises to upset somebody in the process, because on some level she represents a heliocentric view of modern rap.

Ariana Grande’s ‘Sweetener’ tells her comeback story
“Sweetener” is an album of resets for Ariana Grande. It’s impossible to understand about the singer’s fourth album without mentioning the career rupture that influenced it: the 2017 bombings at her Manchester concert, a tragedy that Grande has credited with reshaping her “Sweetener” songs. And then, for an artist whose music has always been characterized for its romance, came her most dramatic love story yet, her whirlwind engagement to comedian Pete Davidson. The couple announced their plans to marry in June, after just weeks of dating.
On “Sweetener,” Grande reconciles these two life-altering events with 13 tracks that explore the stages of falling in love, and the stages of loving yourself. Every successive Grande album has been hailed as her “most grown-up yet” – a compliment that can double as condescension, as though her tiny stature and Disney princess-esque soprano makes her music girlish by default.
Yet the growth Grande sings about on “Sweetener” is more existential than the confident sexuality of her previous “adult” album, 2016’s “Dangerous Woman.” Here, she’s in Oprah mode, preaching self-love while revealing her struggles along the way, threading the life-affirming themes of the “Sweetener” lead single “No Tears Left to Cry” throughout the album.
How Grande soundtracks this journey is what makes “Sweetener” the most interesting – and, at times, confounding – release of her career. Max Martin, the Swedish production juggernaut behind the majority of Grande’s biggest hits, takes five tracks on the album, while Pharrell Williams, an equally prolific pop producer whose style is colorfully quirky to Martin’s bloodless perfection, worked on seven. Whether listeners prefer Martin’s or Pharrell’s productions will depend on personal taste, but Martin’s contributions are uniformly strong, unsurprising for his reputation as a hit-making mercenary.
Responsible for “Sweetener” singles “No Tears” and “God is a Woman,” Martin is also behind the album’s most obvious contender for its next single, “Breathing,” which achieves the same booming pop euphoria as Grande and Martin’s “Dangerous Woman” hit “Into You.”
If Martin’s tracks have a downside, it’s that (due to the sheer number of pop stars he’s made hits for) his songs can bleed together – “Everytime” is reminiscent of his work on Taylor Swift’s “Reputation,” while the ‘80s flourishes in “Breathing” invoke his work with Carly Rae Jepsen, two influences that aren’t necessarily a bad thing for Grande’s music.
But, oy, those Pharrell tracks. How listeners feel about the sure-to-be-divisive songs he wrote and/or produced on “Sweetener” will largely depend on how they feel about “The Light is Coming,” Grande’s Pharrell-backed June single with Nicki Minaj. The song thrilled some fans as a kooky new direction for Grande, and alienated others who were put off by its cartoonish beat and its inexplicable sampled vocals, sourced from a 2009 CNN clip of a man yelling at Senator Arlen Specter during a town hall.
For better or worse, Pharrell’s seven “Sweetener” tracks don’t get any weirder than “The Light is Coming,” though they largely share the song’s maddeningly ‘extra’ qualities. Pharrell, also a a fashion designer, could stand to apply Coco Chanel’s famous words of sartorial wisdom – “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off” – to his productions, which often pile on ad-libs, programmed beats and vocals-over-vocals to melodies that don’t quite make sense in the first place, veering left when you expect them to turn right.
That isn’t to say that all of his and Grande’s tracks are duds. Highlights include the pair of drunk-in-love tracks “Blazed” and “R.E.M.,” and Grande’s Missy Elliott collaboration “Borderline,” its only fault being that the rapper’s feature isn’t twice as long. The Pharrell-produced closing track “Get Well Soon” is a soulful soundalike to her breakup ballad “Honeymoon Avenue,” the first song on Grande’s 2013 debut “Yours Truly,” sweetly bringing the pop star full circle with a track that celebrates enduring love.
More flashes of the throwback R&B that characterized Grande’s earlier releases come courtesy of her longtime producer Tommy Brown, who partners with Grande on “Better Off,” on which she gets introspective about a boy with a hot body and half a heart. Brown also backs “Pete Davidson, a minute-long interlude about her fiance, one of the many tracks that imagine Davidson as a dream incarnate as she sings, “I thought you into my life / Whoa, look at my mind.”
The best of Brown and Grande’s tracks, though, is easily “Goodnight and Go,” a brilliant semi-cover of Imogen Heap’s 2005 track of the same name. Best known for her vocoder-filtered, a cappella masterpiece “Hide and Seek,” Heap is a professed idol of Grande’s, and Grande keeps much of Heap’s “Goodnight and Go” songwriting intact, adding electronic flourishes to turn the original track’s glitchy pop into the radio anthem the song always deserved to be.
With its self-assured songwriting and a handful of promising potential singles, Grande’s “Sweetener” succeeds as a comeback narrative, giving the artist her happy ending after the toughest year of her career. And in its own way, the album’s hit-or-miss track list is a further sign of growth for Grande, demonstrating that she’s willing to take risks with her music. That the album’s odder tracks don’t quite land, though, is a sign that Grande is still refining her instincts as an artist. A voice as timeless as hers deserves songwriting and production to match.
Ariana Grande has had no “Problem” transitioning from Nickelodeon actress to full-on pop-star, and her wardrobe has gone through a similar evolution. The 25-year-old “No Tears Left To Cry” singer performed at iHeartRadio Wango Tango in June 2018 wearing a bodysuit adorned with sequins and a skater skirt. She accessorized with a few rings, including a sparkly bauble on her left hand. Pete Davidson confirmed their engagement a few weeks later on “The Tonight Show.”

The follow up to last year’s Revival contains 13 tracks in total and features guest appearances from Joyner Lucas, Royce Da 5’9″ & Toronto R&B singer Jessie Reyez, the latter of which appears twice on the project on songs “Nice Guy” & “Good Guy.” Meanwhile production is handled by the likes of Tay Keith, Mike Will Made It, Ronny J, & Boi-1da, among others. It also contains the record “Venom,” which will serve as the theme song for the forthcoming superhero film that Em teased us yesterday.
Following a quick listen, Em looks to get a lot things off chest on this new album, having took shots at those who have perceived his last album, Revival, negatively, including the likes of Charlamagne Tha God, DJ Akademiks & Joe Budden for that matter. It seems unlikely that he’ll be taking a step back from music any time soon especially since he just announced a new project.Wale fans are in luck as he has a new project coming out this week. The rapper took to Twitter to announce his forthcoming project, Free Lunch as well as the September 14th release date. Free Lunch will mark his third EP of the year following May’s Self Promotion and March’s It’s Complicated.

Young Thug shares possible album cover for inevitably melodic “On The Run.”
Young Thug’s On The Run is almost upon us, and the Super Slimey rapper has officially shared the project’s album cover and supporting players. Taking to Instagram to reveal the likely album cover, Thugger captioned the DIY photo with “While I’m down… “ON THE RVN.” Cryptic to be sure, but the featured guests are clearly worked into the project’s legal motif. It seems as if Thugger will be joined by 6LACK, Elton John, and Jaden Smith for this go-around, a far cry from the compilation album Slime Language. Given the talent of Thugger’s chosen few, it seems likely that On The Run takes on a more melodic vibe than its predecessor. While Beautiful Thugger Girls found Country Billy dabbling in, well, country, the jury remains out on this endeavor. It should also be noted that Elton John previously remixed “Rocket Man” with Thug on vocals, leading us to speculate whether the pair will revisit their earlier collaboration.We can only hope it’s a return to form for the YSL capo, who previously earned near-unanimous critical acclaim for his pre-Jeffery run. In any case, On The Run is shaping up to be an exciting project, if only for the unconventional guests and surprise rollout alone.

It seems very possible that Lil Wayne’s long-awaited fifth installment to Tha Carter series will arrive before the end of the year. Weezy’s legal battle with Birdman and Cash Money finally came to an end in early June. Fans are now eagerly waiting to hear the highly anticipated Tha Carter V which has gone to hell and back for its release. While a release date hasn’t been set yet, it seems like Weezy SZN is approaching very soon.The official Young Money Twitter account has tweeted out what seems to be the cover art for Tha Carter V. The photo features Wayne’s palm with his tattoo reading “The World” on it. It’s unsure if this is the official cover art for the project but either way, we’re excited for the project to arrive.

Following Wayne’s settlement with Cash Money and Birdman, many speculated that he began shooting the cover art for the album. Photographer Nabil Elderkin posted a picture of Lil Wayne in front of a Blue backdrop with the caption, alluding that they’re shooting Tha Carter V cover. “Back at it a couple Carter’s later,” he wrote. It wasn’t confirmed that it was for the album but it seemed like a strong possibility.
A few days after he was seen shooting a new music video. It wasn’t clear what the music video was for but we could only hope it was for Tha Carter V.
Wale releases a new 5-track EP titled “Free Lunch” featuring J. Cole & Eric Bellinger.
Lunch has been served. After announcing the project just a couple days ago, Wale decides to come through today and share a new EP for the fans called Free Lunch, which is brought to you by Postmates and their “drivers.”
Free Lunch serves as Wale’s third EP of 2018, as well as his first project since signing to Warner Bros. Records back in May. He released It’s Complicated back in March and then followed that up with another four-track EP titled Self Promotion two months later, but now he’s ready to eat. The 5-track EP features guest appearances from Eric Bellinger & J. Cole, the latter of which appears on the previously heard “My Boy” freestyle.

Kanye West confirms new album with Chance The Rapper is on the way.
Well it looks like Chance’s upcoming album is indeed going to be a joint effort with Kanye West. Over the weekend, Chance teased the title “Good Ass Job” on his Instagram page, leaving fans hopeful that this was finally the title to his upcoming project, and it turns out it’s true. On Monday night, Kanye was a special guest at Chance’s monthly Open Mic night in Chicago, where he officially confirmed that Good Ass Job is the title to their upcoming project.
“Me and Chance working on a new album” Kanye said as the students went nuts. “It’s called Good Ass Job. Now I love you guys very much, we need to go to the studio,” he added before Chano grabbed the mic and gave Kanye a proper closing ovation. We knew Kanye was in Chicago these past few weeks cooking up new material with Chace as we saw by their studio sessions, but we didn’t know it would be a joint album.
This report and confirmation happens just hours after Kanye sent twitter into a frenzy thinking he’s prepping the release of Yeezus 2. He shared a possible tentative cover art on his IG page, resembling what some believe is the sequel to Yeezus, maybe called “Yhandi”? Who knows if this is any correlation to the Chano project, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted moving forward.

Machine Gun Kelly drops off a new 9-track EP titled “Binge.”
Machine Gun Kelly caught the attention of the industry last week he released his Eminem-diss “Rap Devil,” in response to Em’s comments on his surprise album Kamikaze. MGK garnered positive reactions from the hip-hop community for his diss, giving him the upper hand on their highly publicized feud, until the other day that is. Last Friday, Eminem finally fired back at MGK on his own song “Killshot,” which received rave reviews for it’s lethal shots. Then just hours later, with all eyes awaiting his response, MGK reacted to the song calling it “trash” & a 6 out of 10, before going onto to immediately announce a new EP right after that called Binge, which he said was dropping today (9/21), and alas here it is. It’s pretty clear MGK is capitalizing off the extra attention on him right now with this new EP, but we cant blame him for that.
“I’m standing up for not just myself, but my generation,” MGK said. “I’m doing the same shit you [Eminem] did back in your day. life is still real on my side, and I had to take time from the grind to defend myself from someone I called an idol.”

On September 9, Young Thug announced that he would be dropping a new project called On the Rvn in two days. During what should have been his release celebration week, Thugger was hit with an arrest warrant related to eight felony charges from a September 2017 arrest. After turning himself in and bonding out, Young Thug got back on the grind. Two weeks after the initial release date tweet, Thugger finally delivered on his promise of a new tape for his fans. On the Rvn arrived at midnight on Monday (September 24), and as previously reported, the project features appearances from Jaden Smith, Elton John, and 6lack. The eclectic mix of features all share one common trait, they exist outside of the bubble that people would call “normal” or conformist.
Young Thug opted to keep things brief with On the Rvn, ending the new project after just six songs. Thugger has flooded the game with new music this year, some of it being released inadvertently via multiple leaks. Lil Wayne released his much-delayed and highly anticipated Tha Carter V album on Thursday at midnight.
Tha Carter V features rapping from Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott and Snoop Dogg, singing from Nicki Minaj, Ashanti and Nivea, and vocals from XXXTentacion, who was shot and killed earlier this year. The final song includes a prominent sample of the English singer Sampha. Production on the album comes courtesy of longtime collaborator Mannie Fresh, Swizz Beatz, Metro Boomin, Ben Billions and many others.
Wayne teased for several months that the album would be coming in 2018, telling everyone at a club appearance in Miami that he had a meeting about it and things were headed in the right direction. When a widely circulated release date of Sept. 21 turned out to be false, the rapper shared another public service announcement—similar to the one in 2014—confirming that C5 would be out on his 36th birthday.
During his dispute with Cash Money, Wayne kept feeding his fans new music throughout the years, releasing some Dedication mixtapes (and one Reloaded), another Sorry 4 the Wait, Free Weezy Album, Collegrove with 2 Chainz, and the In Tune We Trust EP. Not to mention he kept a respectable feature run on songs with Chance the Rapper, Solange, and many more. Recently, Swizz Beatz dropped the track “Pistol on My Side” with Wayne.

At the end of August, Logic released a freestyle dubbed “YSIV,” where in it he revealed that he was readying another Young Sinatra album for the end of September. He wasted no time following the announcement to start the album’s campaign either, first sharing the hand-drawn cover art & then a slew of records over the past few weeks like “One Day,” “The Return” & “Ready” to name a few. But after weeks of anticipation, Young Sinatra 4 has finally arrived.
On Thursday night, Logic released his fourth studio album, YSIV, his first full-length release since 2017’s Everybody. The project spans 14 tracks and includes guest appearances by Wale, Jaden Smith, Hailee Steinfeld, and members of the Wu-Tang Clan. Logic announced the latter collaboration via social media last week, and also shed a little light on what YSIV will deliver:
“I’ma be honest. This is one of the best albums I ever made,” the Maryland rapper said. “This shit is so boom-bap, it’s so hip-hop, and the reason it’s special is because if I release boom-bap after boom-bap after boom-bap, it wouldn’t be that fucking dope. You gotta put some trap in that shit.”
The album includes the previously released singles “The Return,” “Everybody Dies,” as well as “One Day” featuring OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder.

Kevin Gates drops off the 3rd installment in his “Luca Brasi” series.
Kevin Gates has been teasing his Luca Brasi 3 mixtape for a while now, first announcing the the tape back in July, saying it was on the way. Then a few weeks later in August, we received confirmation of the album when Gates announced that he’s taking his talent on the road for his “Luca Brasi 3” tour this Fall, which kicks off next week in Austin, Texas. To help build hype for the album, Gates has been rolling out new records over the past few weeks, including songs like “Great Man,” “Adding Me” & “Money Long” to name a few, but after weeks of promotion, Luca Brasi 3 has finally arrived today.
Serving as Gates’ first official project since getting released from prison in January, Luca Brasi 3 contains 18 tracks in total and comes with no features, allowing plenty of time for Gates tackle production from the likes of DJ Chose, Rock Boy Beats, Yung Ladd & Yung Lan, among others.
“I’ve been gone a year-and-a-half, so it’s a lot of things that I didn’t really speak on that I get to speak on now,” he said about his first project since getting released. “And there’s a lot of things on Luca Brasi 1 and 2 I couldn’t speak about because I was dealing with it at the time.”

Chief Keef has been feeding the streets with a ton of new projects this year. In fact, the Glo Gang rapper has already released 6 projects in 2018, most recently sharing Ottopsy & Mansion Musick this Summer, and he doesn’t look to be slowing down either. Out of nowhere today, Sosa decides to dig into the vaults and share The Cozart project, which he first announced way back in 2015.
Laced with 17 tracks in total, 5 of which are techno remixes of original songs that Chief Keef teased earlier this year, the follow up to Mansion Musick features guest appearances from Ballout & Jenn Em, the latter of which who appears on the lead single “Chiraq.” Meanwhile production is handled by the likes of 808 Mafia, CBMix, Dolan Beats, TM88, KE On The Track, DP Beats and others.

Five years ago, Migos burst onto the hip-hop scene with their viral hit “Versace.” Quavo was quickly crowned the group’s frontman by the public, with catchy ad-libs accompanying his braggadocios rhymes, potent songwriting, and just an appealing swag the genre hadn’t seen before. Standout features then began to pile up on Huncho’s decorated resume, quickly showing that the ATL native was here to stay.
The 27-year-old has used that momentum to springboard the Migos into mainstream stardom and vast commercial success. In 2017 alone, Culture debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200and the anthemic Lil Uzi Vert-assisted single “Bad and Boujee” also topped the Billboard Hot 100. Quavo didn’t stop there, as the Atlanta native landed on DJ Khaled’s no. 1 single “I’m the One,” and closed out the year with the bouncy Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho joint project with frequent collaborator Travis Scott.
The tidal wave continued for the Migos, who proved to be much more than a one-man band, as Offset and Takeoff rose to prominence and shined bright with moments of their own. The latter found his pocked on the group’s second No. 1 with 2018’s Culture sequel and Offset’s mainstream appeal bubbled courtesy of his relationship with Cardi B, in addition to a fiery collab album alongside Metro Boomin’ and 21 Savage in Without Warning.

With the other Migos members catching up to Quavo in popularity, the buzz seemingly cooled off regarding the public’s demand of a Huncho solo album. The rapper-producer kicked off Huncho season by unveiling his Quavo Huncho solo album at the top of August, with the release of a triad of solo tracks in “Workin Me,” “Bubble Gum,” and “Lamb Talk.”
After a soft release date of September came and went, Huncho officially announced that his anticipated solo debut would finally drop on Oct. 12.

When Quavo was asked why now is the time for him to work on a solo project, the ATL rapper says that he and the rest of the members of Migos want to each express themselves through full projects. “It’s like we’re all painting a different picture, and we all hear different sounds and see different pictures and got different visions,” he said. “So we all just get a chance to get that off on this album and we’ll be back for Culture III.”

Meek Mill’s new album has transformed from “surprise” to imminent reality. The Philadelphia hero has been teasing his upcoming endeavor for a minute, and as of now, it has finally shed “untitled” status. The project is set to be called Championships, and Meek has taken to Instagram to share the official album artwork. The colorful shot captures a close up of Meek’s face, with emphasis on his focused gaze. Minimalist in nature, though visually stimulating nonetheless.Championships is set to drop at the end of the month, on November 30th. While we still don’t entirely know what to expect, a Cardi B collaboration has already been confirmed; from the sound of it, it’s going to be a banger. What do you think of Meek’s artwork? Though it’s best not to judge an album based on its cover,artwork can play a pivotal role in emphasizing an album’s tone.
